Thomas Oyster Company kit

Thomas Oyster Company kit

Thomas Oyster Company - prototype

The founder of the Thomas Oyster House was Thomas Thomas. (Really, that was his name!) He was one of the first oyster growers in the state of Connecticut. The oyster house was built in 1874 and used for the family business in the City Point section of New Haven, Connecticut.

Originally the building was used as a culling shop, where oysters were sorted by size and shipped in their shells by barrel to markets in New York City and as far away as California. When Thomas died in 1918 his son John took over the business and converted it to a shucking house where they opened the oysters and packed them in iced wooden kegs ready for delivery to various markets. The building was used until 1956 when John Thomas retired.

In 1970 the building was donated to the Mystic Seaports Museum of America. In 1984 it was brought by barge and restored and rebuilt at its present location in the museum.
