Block Station Gainesville, New York Kit 2051 ![]() ![]() ![]() The structures shown here were located at Gainesville, New York, at the site of one of the few passing sidings of Baltimore & Ohio's Rochester Division. They consisted of a block station building and an outhouse. Train crews picked up orders here after being alerted by the train order signal located on the mast in front of the building. In the days of steam power, Gainesville was also the location of a helper station, and the helper locomotives were cut off here. Originally, this control center was located in the office of the Gainesville passenger depot. After passenger service ceased in the 1940s, the railroad tore down the depot and relocated these buildings here from elsewhere on the system. Diesels eliminated the need for helpers since extra units could be added to handle any tonnage. The Gainesville block station was closed in 1977 when train orders were issued only at Salamanca, Silver Springs, LeRoy, and Brooks Avenue yard in Rochester. The railroad removed the block signals in 1975 when train radio communication became commonplace and the block signals were no longer needed.
