Kit 1090

Tolleson's Grocery

prototype
The current use of the structure as of March 18, 2010.

This kit is a result of a project to recreate the town of Wickenburg in the year 1915 for the Desert Caballeros Museum. James Bansner is creating the HO scale drawings for these structures and is working from photographs, Sanborn maps, and the actual structures - for those that are still standing. When they are available to us, we will include photos of the actual buildings for your reference.

Henry Wickenburg came to the area in search of gold. He was rewarded with the discovery of Vulture Mine, where over $30 million in gold was found. Ranchers and farmers discovered the fertile flood plain of the Hassayampa River and settled in the area. Together with Henry Wickenburg and the miners, they helped found the young community of Wickenburg in 1863.

It was a rough start for the town with Indian wars, mine closures, desperados, drought and a disastrous flood in 1890 when the Walnut Creek Dam burst. Despite these trials and tribulations the town continued to grow and in 1895 the railroad arrived in town.

The Town of Wickenburg was incorporated in 1909. This kit is modeled after the Tolleson Grocery and Past Time Pool Hall. Although altered, this structure still sits on Center Street.
