These servants (slave)\0x2008houses would have been built shortly thereafter. After the American Civil War many of those freed moved elsewhere for work but also many returned as "free" workers. Each structure housed from 3-12 people, usually in family units. Each house had a fenced in back yard with a family garden and an outhouse. These small structures might also work well as logging or mining cabins.
